Yuyo Brujo is a consummate vendor for tango shoes. The shoes are crafted with utmost care and competence, with the needs of the tango dancer always prioritized. Elena Velasco Pena, the owner and founder, is an experienced tango dancer herself, boasting 15 years of tango experience. She oversees the entire process from design/concept to the finished product with expertise only found in those who truly love their work, and understand it inside and out.
The excellent quality and beauty her tango shoes are only matched by their comfort and reliable sturdiness. It was actually difficult for me to choose a pair; I had never worn stiletto heeled shoes so confidently. My feet felt so well-supported and grounded, I could have run up a mountain trail without fear of falling, let alone twirl around on a dance floor. I have weak ankles, so tripping, twisting, and hurting myself in high heels has always been a concern, but Elena’s shoes are so well-made, so stable and secure, that I finally felt the freedom of wearing high heels with true confidence. I even forget I’m wearing high heels.
Each shoe is crafted beautifully, and reflects both a background story to its name and its design. In fact, the shop itself is named after a famous tango song. Be sure to ask Elena to explain the history and vision for the shoes you like – you will be enthralled with just how much thought, care, and loving attention has been poured into each design.
I purchased two pairs of tango shoes: a 7 cm heel Yacaré Abierto Rose Gold. At first I thought this was already daring since I have trouble wearing high heels even 6 cm high. But, after my first tango lessons with them, they felt almost too short since I felt so comfortable in them. I went back two weeks later and bought a second pair, the Yuyo Brujo, arguably their signature tango shoe in 8 cm. I know that one day I will buy a pair of 9 cm shoes because they are so beautiful (and make my legs look amazing).
Lastly, the entire private fitting experience was exceptional. I never felt pressured to buy a pair of shoes, and it was a delight just talking to Elena since her knowledge and passion for her work are effervescent. She generously shared her experience and knowledge, instructing me on what to look out for in tango shoes, thus empowering me to make an informed choice. Her experienced eye could immediately tell when a shoe didn’t fit me properly. She truly wishes her clients to walk (dance?) away happy with their purchase.
I’ve been to a few tango lessons, and not only do I feel confident in dancing, but truth be known, my shoes were the prettiest in the room.
